Since early May 2008, KPL is no longer available as a our freeware product, KPL domains - - http://K-P-L.org, http://K-P-L.com and http://kidsprogramminglanguage.com - - now point to a URL on the Phrogram site making this announcement. http://phrogram.com/kpl.aspx
If you considered KPL to learn programming, you should know you can do anything with KPL's successor, Phrogram, that you could have done with KPL, plus a lot more. Phrogram is just as easy to learn, a lot more powerful, has an active user community and will continue to be improved as we invest our efforts in making it even more compelling as a way to learn real programming in a really fun way. The Phrogram user envrionment has also been translated into nearly as many languages as KPL (and we hope to have more localized versions soon).
Just as importantly, the Microsoft Windows platform, on which both KPL and Phrogram run as .NET programming languages, has advanced substantially since we first introduced KPL in mid-2005. The vast majority of Windows PCs now run on the later versions of Windows that support .NET Framework 2.0 - - Windows 2000, WIndows XP and Windows Vista - - and thus are capable of running Phrogram.
Another critical factor in our decision to discontinue KPL is, frankly, our company's financial situation. To reach our goal of becoming a leader in next generation software technology education and easy-to-learn and -do computer programming, we need as many as possible of our product users to also be our customers. Phrogram's low price - - including Phrogram Express, which is less than $30 - - should make this possible for the vast majority of KPL users. We don't generate subscription revenues from services, or advertising revenues from our website, so we rely on our ability to sell software to make this a viable enterprise. As we balance our desire to grow our company with our interest in building our user community. having our own freeware (KPL) compete with our only commercial software product (Phrogram) is not a wise approach to realize our company's long-term potential.
Going forward, we hope current KPL users will try Phrogram. If you are a KPL user and have any questions about this, please feel free to post them here. In a few more months, we will also discontinue the KPL forums on this website.
Thanks to all who volunteered their time and energy and thereby helped KPL become a worldwide freeware success story. If you haven't done so already, we hope you will consider joining the Phrogram community!
