    Phrogram Help is here!

To get the Windows Help (.chm) version, so you can download once and don't need to be online to use, click here

    Background

The Phrogram team has been working lately on a web-based help system, which is being officially announced by this post. Phrogram Help will be part of our last 2.x version - - 2.5, which we plan to release by the end of August. You will be able to find it as a link under the Help menu, in place of the User Guide (in PDF format) which is accessible from there now. So, we're ready to show you what it will look like and see what you think ...

    Let us know your feedback!

A big advantage of web-based help is that it can be expanded and improved upon, from time to time, without introducing new product releases. But we don't want to officially launch Phrogram Help until we hear from you. What do you think? Do you have ideas for additional topics that you would like to see included? - If so, perhaps you could help us write them ;). Do you see mistakes that need to be corrected - we know there are going to be at least a few ;) ? So please, let us know what you think about Phrogram Help

    Next steps

We have some other things to do before Phrogram 2.5 is officially up and running. For one thing, we have not had enough information (unfortunately!) about our 3D library in our Class Library Browser, and that lack is still obvious in this Phrogram Help beta. That will be addressed soon. We will also make other "CLB" changes, and some changes to the sample program folders, before Phrogram 2.5 becomes available as our latest product download.

Then, as you may already know from Zman’s “teaser” post, it's on to a new version of Phrogram, rather than another 2.x “point” release... Phrogram 3.0 will introduce a new approach for 3D programming, based on Microsoft's XNA framework (the successor to DirectX). It will also include several other changes that will improve your overall programming experience. The release date for Phrogram 3.0 is still "TBD" - first we need to make the beta availabile, and we hope to do that in the fall.

As is generally true of commercial software applications, if you already own Phrogram 2.x, you will be able to use your existing license for Phrogram 2.5. But, with Phrogram 3.0, we will charge for an upgrade from Phrogram 2.x and we will have a separate pricing structure for first-time purchasers of Phrogram 3.0. These details are still being worked out. Keep in mind, though, that programs created in Phrogram 2.x (apart from those that rely on the DirectX-based classes for 3D and game controller functionalitiy) will be forward compatible in Phrogram v3.0 – that is, you should have no problem opening and running your 2.x created programs in Phrogram 3.0.

Summer is a good time to get outside and forget about your computer (at least for awhile), but its also an exciting time for the Phrogram team and community, as we continue to make .... Real programming, really fun!

    Thanks,
    DavidW for
    The Phrogram Team

Probably too early to answer but had an intial play around with Phrogram Help and it looks a pretty good idea - beats playing around with my outdated download to printer of the Phrogram manual PDF! And thumbing around...looks pretty neat and simplistic...

Look forward to Phrogram 3.0...interesting and natural versioning 3.0! for 3D!...something we have not done...yet...but will always support you guys 'cos you gave us the opportunity to learn programming!

    Thanks, TomDad.

One further thing worth noting about the info on Phrogram 3.0 - -no matter what, we will make sure that it will be less expensive to buy Phrogram now and get 3.0 at the upgrade price, than it will be to buy Phrogram 3.0 but not as an upgrade from 2.x. So don't delay diving into Phrogram because you're waiting for the next wave ;).

    Re: Phrogram Help is here!

Yeah 3D is definately the way to go...but we are "structuring" our programming skills before we go that way...so far we are at "stuff just dropping down the screen" then it'll be a platform game, then a maze game and then when we think we have honed our skills in 2D. Go for the big bad boy - 3D! Must admit progression has been slow so far, only kick started myself programming in the 21st century in 2006...! But did look at our first game the other day and thought yeah - we have moved on a bit in nearly 20 months...

Thanks for the thought on the pricing upgrade for 3.0, I'm not exactly a big earner these days,( I'm one of those downshifters you hear about!)

Just to let you know...the search box at the top of the screen on the Phrogram help toolbar is not working...?...

Also against every method function or whatever it would be great to see example code.

Just a short routine showing in action what it does...

I hadn't noticed that problem but will look into it this week - thanks for pointing it out!

    Re: Phrogram Help is here!

I investigated this and it is working correctly. It just isn't clear.

That SearchBox in the UI across the top is called QuickSearch, which is for searching inside the current topic. I edited the Javascript file to insert the words "Search in this topic". Replace those words with a word or phrase that appear in the topic you have open and you will see that word or phrase be highlighted.

    Re: Phrogram Help is here!

Ah... now I get it...yes it does work of course.

Sorry not heard the term 'QuickSearch' before, and a lot of guides are going on line these days - so better get used to it myself!

    Re: Phrogram Help is here!

    Possible confusion area:

    Model3D.Direction ( type Point3D )

The help files say it is a 3D vector. This is not true. It is a collection of 3D rotation values, 1 for each axis ( X, Y, Z ). Because it is a point3D, it still has the function such as Offset() and Distance(), but they won't work right because X,Y,Z are not positional values. They are rotational values.

I discovered this by trying to make a "gun" that fire lasers in a specified direction. I used 1 value called Rotation and calculated the appropriate x and Z values for a 2D vector ( because I thought Direction was a vector ). After much meddling, I realized the reason nothing I tried was working is because Direction.X, Direction.Y, and Direction.Z are rotations.

It really would help to avert confusion if the help file explained that Direction. X,Y,Z are rotations.  Maybe illustrate the way they work.

    Re: Phrogram Help is here!

Yes good point... David is making some changes and I have a note to make things more consistent n the future. in 3d POint3d is used for points, vectors and this which is really not right.
